Dementia is classified as a symptom or as a syndrome that refers to an impairment of at least two brain functions, severe enough to interfere with daily life. Simplistically, dementia is caused by damage to or loss of the cells of the brain. The cause of this damage can be due to trauma, medication side effects, excessive alcohol intake, vitamin deficiencies or some of the more common diseases like: Alzheimer's, Vascular Dementia, Frontotemporal Lobe Dementia, and Lewy Body Dementia.
Some dementias follow well documented progressions, like Alzheimer's (see this video), while Vascular Dementia can target any area where vascular damage, TIAs or strokes damage the cells of the brain. Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) primarily affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Lewy Body Dementia is often associated with Parkinson's disease. Patients with Lewy Body Dementia often have changes in personality, behavior and language but can include hallucinations and a loss of impulse control. Consultation with a neurologist is crucial since proper diagnosis of the cause of dementia can provide better dementia care.
Texas Angels understands that dementia is very difficult for clients and their families. It is well documented that family caregivers can greatly reduce the stress and hardship with proper support. Our caregivers have special training to provide that support. We understand the different causes of dementia, the associated symptoms and how to uniquely address them based on the client's specific needs, to provide the best possible Dementia Care
Texas Angels uses a model for care based on positive emotional support for both client and family; identification of strengths and capabilities; and allowing clients to use these in their daily activities. We identify triggers that lead to inappropriate or unwanted behaviors. Caregivers then engage in avoidance of triggers (including frustrating tasks or exposure to difficult situations), and use a variety of techniques, like redirection, designed to decrease stress, diffuse situations and minimize negative behaviors.
We use this Dementia Care Model to care for our clients with dementia, in addition to providing support and assistance with, ADLs, IADLs and home exercise programs, as determined by your physical therapist or physician.
